Peaceful Valley Honey Hosts Davie County Beekeeper Association's Third Annual Apiary DayAs students began to arrive, Greg and I finished up with last minute preparations. Greg gave some advice on protective clothing as the students suited up. ![]() ![]()
Before actually opening the hives, there were some last minute instructions and a demonstration on lighting the smoker, followed by students lighting their own smokers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Smokers lit, students observed Greg inspecting a hive. They passed around frames of honeybees with their brood, honey and pollen. ![]() ![]()
After a time, students ventured out on their own to make their own inspections and observations. ![]() ![]()
Joseph Tupay brought two packages of bees and two empty hives so that he and the other students could learn how to hive packages. ![]() ![]()
After observing how it is done, Joe was able to successfully hive the second package. ![]() ![]()
As the day drew to a close, names were drawn for the free hives that were donated by several members of Davie County Beekeepers Association and for door prizes donated by Miller Bee, Dadant, Better Bee and Mann Lake. |
